Wheat Allergy - Gluten Intolerance / Sensitivity
Wheat is one of the top 8 allergens in the US. Wheat allergy is NOT the same as Celiac disease. Celiac disease is a permanent, genetic autoimmune disorder that is inherited and is the body's inability to digest gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. The body's immune system attacks normal tissue in response to eating gluten. Eating gluten sets off an autoimmune response that causes inflammation and permanent damage to the small intestine.
An allergy to wheat is an immune system reaction to one or more of the proteins found in wheat. People who are allergic to wheat have an IgE-mediated response to the proteins in wheat, but may be able to tolerate other grains.
Symptoms of a wheat allergy may included:
Rash or hives Psoriasis Nasal congestion Wheezing, difficulty breathing Swelling of the lips, tongue and throat Abdominal pain, cramps Flatulance (gas) Diarrhea
An allergy to wheat can also cause a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis.
