Soy Allergy

A soy allergy refers to the body's reaction to the protein in soy. Soy is listed as one of the top 8 allergens. An allergy occurs when the body reacts to the protein in soy, as if it was a foreign substance. Symptoms of soy allergy can affect the skin, the digestive tract and the respiratory system. If you suspect you have a food allergy, consult your physician. Allergy testing may help to determine if you have a food allergy.

Symptoms of a soy allergy may include:

Tingling of the lips, mouth or tongue

Hives, itching or eczema

Wheezing, runny nose or shortness of breath

Abdominal pain and cramps

Diarrhea

Vomiting

Dizziness or lightheadedness

A severe allergic response may result in anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis causes severe symptoms such as a swollen throat or a "lump" in your throat that makes it difficult to breath, rapid pulse, severe drop in blood pressure, severe dizziness or loss of consciousness, drooling with an inability to swallow and full-body redness. If you experience any of these severe symptoms seek medical attention immediately.
