Shellfish

An allergy to shellfish is one of the most common food allergies in adults and is one of the top 8 food allergens in the United States. About 2% of American adults have an allergy to shellfish. This food allergy is more likely to develop in adulthood, than in early childhood.

Shellfish are divided into two types - mollusks and crustaceans. Most mollusks have a hinged, two-part shell and include clams, ousters and squid. Crustaceans are those with a hard shell such as lobster, shrimp and crayfish. People who are allergic to one type are generally allergic to both types. in addition, they may also be allergic to snails, dust mites and cockroaches.

Symptoms of a shellfish allergy may include:

     * Hives

     * Eczema

     * Nausea

     * Abdominal pain and cramps

     * Vomiting

     * Diarrhea

     * Wheezing and/or coughing

     *Runny nose

     * Swelling of the lips, tongue, face and throat

There is not cure for a shellfish allergy. Complete avoidance of all shellfish is the only treatment at this time. you need to very vigilant about reading ingredient lists and be aware of what terms to look for.
