People with a severe peanut  or tree nut allergy can go into anaphylactic shock from ingesting the smallest particle of a peanut or tree nut, or peanut oil or other nut oil. Anaphylaxis is a sudden, severe, whole-body reaction. This reaction affects a number of areas of the body at the same time. An explosive reaction involving the skin, lungs, nose, throat, and gastrointestinal tract can then result. Although severe cases of anaphylaxis can occur within seconds or minutes of exposure and be fatal if untreated, many reactions are milder and can be ended with prompt medical therapy. People who do experience this severe reaction to peanuts need to get medical attention immediately and treatment with epinephrine.

An allergy to peanuts or tree nuts doesn't always result in anaphylactic shock. A person can have a systemic reaction. The reaction is over the entire body, but not anaphylactic. Even though the person's breathing is fine, it could quickly attack the lungs and turn into an anaphylactic reaction after suffering a systemic reaction.

Symptoms to watch for when an allergic person has been exposed to Peanuts or Tree Nuts:

  • Shortness of breath

  • Wheezing

  • Swelling around the mouth, eyes or throat

  • Itchiness anywhere on the body

  • Hives and/or redness where food has touched skin

  • Abdominal pain or cramping

  • Confusion, fainting, light-headedness, dizziness
