Casein Allergy Symptoms

 

Milk is made up of water, protein (casein), carbohydrates (a milk sugar called lactose), minerals, fats and other substances. An allergy occurs when our bodies react to the proteins in cow’s milk, casein and whey, as if they were a foreign substance.

 

Casein allergy refers to the body's allergic reaction to casein, which is a protein found in dairy products. Milk is made up of water, protein (casein), carbohydrates (a milk sugar called lactose), minerals, fats and other substances. An allergy occurs when the body reacts to the protein in milk, as if it was a foreign substance. Symptoms of casein allergy can affect the skin, the digestive tract and the respiratory system.

 

Symptoms can include:

  • Runny nose

  • Asthma

  • Vomiting

  • Hives and skin rashes

  • Eczema

  • Diarrhea

  • Hyperactive behavior

  • Ear infections

  • Bloating

  • Water eyes

  • Flatulance (intestinal gas)

  • Dark circles around the eyes

  • Recurrent bronchitis

  • Malabsorption of nutrients (anemia)

  • Failure to thrive
